Hillview Open - 28/03/2009

Looking at the weights from the Wednesday open, i was rearing to go and hopefully catch a few, as the weights had been fairly consistent and good. 15 of us fishing, so it was decided as a rover . . . . again! I do hate these types of matches, as i always draw pants!! This time was no different, pulling out last but one. At least there was still some choice. Going down the list, no one was deciding to go on the pegs that won on the Wednesday, I was amazed to see that when it came to my turn peg 16 was still left. I ran to it i must say!

Setting up was quite simple. 1 short pole rig (7 metres) which comprised of a Mick Wilkinson pellet float 0.6g on 0.14 Silstar to and 0.12 bottom. I decided to fish hard 6mm pellet on the B911 size 18 hook. The only other rig i got out was an edge rig for 3 ft of water to both pallets, left and right. This rig was on 0.16 straight through using a 0.2 Hillbilly Grizzily, hook choice was a Tubertini 175 in size 2.

At the all in i potted in half a pot of pellet and corn in one edge, and half of that amount in the other to see how they wanted the feed. Then out on the 7 metre line with a full kinder pot of 4mm feed pellet and a 6mm on the hook. After 10 minutes i had 1 liner and no real bites. I put in a few more pellets and started to regularly lift and drop the rig, second lift i hooked a fish on the way up which dropped off. Next cast i finally hooked a fish, a skimmer about half a pound. This wasn't what i hoped for. In the next few casts i caught another 5 skimmers, including one real bream about 2lb. After this quick flurry i had nothing so i decided to feed it and rest it. This meant trying the edges a lot earlier than i wanted. Nothing. . . .

Needless to say i had a shocking match and no matter what i tried i couldnt catch a carp (apart fromn the 1 mug out the edge about 7lb which was the only bite in the sides). To say i was baffled was an understatement as the fish were there on the Wednesday.

I packed up 20 minutes before the end and tipped back, feeling very dissappointed about my performance although i felt i couldnt have done anything better.

The match was won from the other lake with 90lb....45lb of those skimmers!
